Roger Beckerman becomes 6. US Open Champion in Houston
The Houston Skat Club, ISPA USA’s newest club, hosted the 6. US Open Championship at the Houston Liederkranz on Ella Blvd on 01-02 FEB2020. Twenty-four players from Texas, Ohio, the Midwest, the West Coast and Ontario gathered for an exciting competition and a warm reception from our Texas hosts.
The cards ran well at some times, and very brutally at others. During Series 4 and 5 on Sunday, no player ever made 1000 points while sitting at Table 1. This allowed Roger Beckerman from Cleveland to capture the title from 6th place going into his strong final series, amassing 5783 total points. Ontario’s Scott McCormick, a former US Champion and one of two Canadians in the field, finished second, followed by Texas’ own Mike Kivlin. Seriensieger prizes went to Bill Thompson (Cleveland), Johannes Eggers (Texas), Roger Beckerman, Mike Kivlin and Gerd Reiner (Red Deer, AB)
Kim Soechting, also from Texas, became the 6. US Ladies Champion. Fellow Texan Conway Waak was victorious in the Vorturnier on Friday night. The US Teams Championship went to the team “Neatly Trimmed Bread”, consisting of Roger Beckerman and Bill Thompson.
The Houston Skat Club did itself proud and hosted a very fun and enjoyable tournament. We hope to pair Houston with the regular Skat tournament in New Braunfels as an annual event on the second weekend of February. Mark your calendars now!
